How adding business days works

A business day (or working day) is a weekday that is not a public holiday. To add business days, start from your date, step forward one day at a time, and count only the days that are business days. The start date itself is not counted. Subtracting works the same way in the other direction; enter a negative number such as -5.

Which days are holidays depends on where you are. US federal holidays differ from UK bank holidays, and many countries have regional holidays (for example US state holidays, or holidays that apply only in Scotland or Bavaria). Pick a country, and optionally a region code, to apply the right calendar. You can also add your own company closure days.

Worked examples

The calculator above is prefilled with the US example. Set the country to "None" to see the weekends-only answer.

Common uses

To count the business days between two dates instead, use the "Business days between" tab or read how to calculate business days between dates. For invoice terms, see the Net 30 due date calculator.

The same calculation is available as a JSON API, so you can run it inside an accounting, ERP or workflow system. Get a free API key (1,000 requests a month) or read the OpenAPI spec.

Holiday data comes from an open-source dataset and may be incomplete, especially for regional, ad-hoc or newly declared holidays. Check legally or financially critical deadlines against an official source.

Frequently asked questions

Is the start date counted when adding business days?

No. Counting starts on the next day. 1 business day after a Monday is the Tuesday, if Tuesday is not a holiday.

Which holidays are skipped?

The public holidays for the country and optional region you choose, plus any company holidays you enter. Choose "None" to skip weekends only.

Can I subtract business days?

Yes. Enter a negative number, for example -5, to go back five business days.

What are 10 business days after November 20, 2026 in the US?

Monday, December 7, 2026, because Thanksgiving Day on November 26 is skipped along with the weekends.
